Frequently Asked Questions

Why contribute to UMSL?
Private support makes the difference between being good and being excellent. Gifts to UMSL help enrich student educational opportunities, support ground-breaking research, provide state-of-the-art learning facilities, and strengthen programs that benefit the community and world at large.

UMSL is a public university; doesn’t the state take care of its needs?
UMSL is assisted, but by no means is fully supported, by the State of Missouri. Once responsible for 60% of the university’s budget and support, in 2015, state appropriations accounted for only 28%. While declining state support is a national trend facing many public universities, no  state university can be competitive today without significant private support.

Who is contributing financial support?
Gifts come from various sources -- alumni, friends, faculty, staff, foundations and corporations – all of whom who recognize the importance of maintaining and strengthening UMSL’s record of academic excellence.

What does UMSL do with gifts?
All gifts are utilized according to the donor’s wishes. Unrestricted gifts are directed to the area of greatest need as determined by the chancellor.

In most nonprofit listings, UMSL falls under the umbrella of: "The Curators of the University of Missouri", an instrumentality of the state of Missouri. In June 2008, the University of Missouri created a separate 501(c)(3) named "The Curators of the University of Missouri Special Trust" (Special Trust). Gifts to this 501(c)(3) may be designated for an individual campus, department, or any other entity within the University. The tax ID number is 26-6440629.

Why does UMSL charge an administration fee on donations?
The University of Missouri-St. Louis works hard to keep its administrative overhead as low as possible. However, tuition, fees and state funding do not cover all of the required expenses, including the expenses associated with the engagement of our external constituents so as to raise critically needed private support. All gifts to UMSL are subject to a 5% administrative fee, an amount far below that assessed by most nonprofits.
